ACNE ROSACEA
What is Acne Rosacea?

Acne Rosacea is a condition which appears as redness or blushing across the cheeks and nose. It can appear as visible blood vessels on the face, swelling, bumps which can sometimes be filled with pus, dry skin with a stinging or burning sensation. The swelling and dryness may also spread to the eyes leading do dry, irritated eyes and swollen eyelids. The condition can come and go in bouts with periods of complete recovery. Over time, it can lead to thickening of the skin especially on the nose.

Acne Rosacea has no cure and treatment is usually to relieve the symptoms when they are present.

What causes Acne Rosacea?

The cause of Acne Rosacea is not known, but it is believed to be due to an over active immune system which could be hereditary. The immune system triggers the response on the face when exposed to certain triggers. Triggers can include:
Alcohol, hot or spicy foods, stress, extremes in hot or cold or weather changes, exposure to sunlight, certain drugs and cosmetics.
What treatments are there?

Mild to moderate Rosacea can be treated using creams to relieve the redness. Mirvaso (Brimonidine) works by constricting swollen blood vessels on the face and nose which cause the redness. This visibly reduces the redness on the face in around 12 hours.

Other treatments are available for pimples or pus, such as antibiotics, which can be either applied as creams or taken orally. These do not treat the rosacea but reduce the infections which lead to puss and pimples.

For more severe cases of Rosacea, specialist treatment may be needed such as laser treatment to target the enlarged blood vessels.
