SCALP PSORIASIS
What is Scalp Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a skin condition which causes red, flaky crusty patches of skin covered with silvery scales. Plaque Psoriasis is the most common type of psoriasis. The patches in plaque psoriasis are usually have a distinct, well-defined border between the regular skin and the affected skin.

Scalp Psoriasis is a common type of psoriasis which is usually seen as dryness, redness or soreness around the edges of the hairline and on the scalp. In some cases, it can affect the entire scalp.  The skin is usually very dry, flaky, scaly, red, sore, itchy, thickened and can sometimes crack, bleed and burn or sting.  In some cases it can also lead to hair loss in the affected areas.

Psoriasis is not contagious and is not spread by contact, however it can be very distressing for the person suffering, and can make the skin more prone to infections.

Over-the-counter Scalp Psoriasis treatments

What causes Psoriasis?

Scalp Psoriasis is caused by a overproduction of skin cells on the scalp which is thought to be due to a malfunction in the immune system which may be from genetic or environmental causes.

The condition can be trigged by events such as trauma or injury, infections, changes in weather such as heat or cold, stress, smoking, alcohol and reactions to some drugs.
What treatments are there?

Several treatments such as shampoos, lotions, gels and ointments are available to treat scalp psoriasis. Some of these can be bought over the counter. These usually contain coal tar or salicylic acid which helps to remove and reduce the thickened flaky skin from the scalp. Medicated treatments containing vitamin D and steroids are available on prescription from your GP or via our skin clinic.
