Period Delay

Delaying your period is possible and may be necessary on special occasions such as when going on holiday, or for events such as weddings. Please click on the link below to start your online consultation or scroll down for further information.
Periods are never convenient for any women and often happen at the worst of times. Having a period at the wrong time can ruin a special occasion, such as a holiday or a wedding.

By delaying y our period, you can enjoy your special occasion without fear of an untimely bleed, especially when you are close to your monthly cycle. Following your special event, you can stop taking the treatment for your monthly cycle to return to normal without any long-term risks.
Period delay products contain the hormone Norethisterone.

Norethisterone (Utovlan) is a hormonal treatment used to delay periods. It is taken three times a day starting three days before the onset of your period and taken continuously throughout your holiday or event. After stopping, the period usually occurs within 3 days.

Norethisterone should not be used for more than 20 days.
As with most drugs, there are some side-effects but most people will not experience many whilst taking these. Some of the side-effects which could occur include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Breakthrough bleeding
  • Period changes
  • Acne
  • Breast tenderness
  • Increased risk of blood clots

If used correctly norethisterone is safe to use short term. It is important to follow the guidance and not use it for more than necessary. There is a risk of blood clots if used over a long period of time of if you take too much.

If you are flying you are more at risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis if taking Northisterone. We recommend using flight socks whilst on the flight to reduce this risk.
If you are taking a combined oral contraceptive, you can effectively delay your period by starting your next strip straight away and missing the 7-day pill free period. For more information on how to do this, please visit the NHS page on delaying your period.
Norethisterone is available in its generic form, and as a brand called Utovlan.

Both of these are prescription-only and will need a consultation with a prescriber before they can be issued.
