What is Champix?

Champix is an effective treatment to help quit smoking. It contains the active ingredient Varenicline. It is a proven to be one of the most effective ways to quit smoking. Effects can be seen as little as 2 weeks. Completing the 12 week programme can help to sustain the quit attempt even after the course has ended.

How does Champix work?

Champix has a dual mechanism of action. It blocks nicotine receptors in the brain so cigarettes have less effect. This makes the action of smoking less enjoyable. It also attaches itself to the same receptors imitating the action of nicotine on the brain and reducing withdrawal symptoms.
Champix is started with a starter pack, followed by maintenance packs.

The starter pack contains an increasing dose of champix over 2 weeks to allow your body to get used to taking champix. Following the initial course, champix is taken twice a day for the remainder of the 12 week course.

Champix should be taken with or after food to reduce side-effects such as upset stomach and nausea.
There have been reports of depression, suicidal ideation and behaviour and suicide attempts in patients taking CHAMPIX.

Stopping smoking with or without treatment cause changes in thinking or behaviour, feelings of depression and anxiety and can be associated with a worsening of psychiatric disorder.
