What is Utovlan?

Utovlan contains the active ingredient norethisterone 5mg. Norethisterone is a synthetic progesterone hormone similar to a womans natural hormones. It is used to delay a woman’s period for short durations of upto 17 days when needed for special occasions such as going on holiday, weddings or important work events.

How it works?

Utovlan is taken before the last three days of your period. It works by maintaining higher levels of the hormone progesterone in your body which delays the period for the duration it is being taken. The periods return back to normal once it is stopped. Women will usually have a period within three days of stopping the tablets.

Is Utolvan safe?

Utovlan is usually safe to take for occasional use. It is a short term medication and can be taken to delay the period for upto 17 days without any major problems.

Utovlan should not be used for longer durations and if you want to delay your periods for longer or want to use it to regulate your periods, speak to your prescriber for a more suitable treatment.
In order to use Utovlan, you must be able to predict when your next period is due. Utovlan must be taken THREE days before the start of your normal period in order to be effective.
  • Take one tablet three times a day continuously until needed.
  • When no longer needed, stop taking it and your period should return within 3 days.
It should not be taken for more than 20 days in total, which is enough to delay your period for upto 17 days.
Do not take Utovlan and speak to your doctor or pharmacist if:
- if you are allergic to norethisterone, similar hormone medicines, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine

Risk of Venous Thromboembolism (VTE): The chances of getting a clot are very slightly higher if you are taking a hormone medicine like Utovlan.  If you are due to fly on an aeroplane whilst taking norethisterone,  we advise you use flight socks to prevent any risk of clots during the flight.
