What is Wegovy?
Wegovy (semaglutide) belongs to a group of drugs called Glucose-like-peptide-1 agonists (GLP-1). Wegovy can be used for diabetes as well as weight loss treatment to regulate hormones in the stomach which control appetite.
How does it works?
Wegovy mimics natural hormones in your gut which control your appetite and making you feel fuller for longer.
It is effective in aiding weight loss when combined with lifestyle changes such as exercise and a calorie controlled diet.
How effective is Wegovy?
Wegovy has been clinically proven to reduce weight by an average of up to 15% over 68 weeks. In addition, this study also showed that 85% of people on Wegovy lost at least 5% of their body weight by the end of the trial.
Full details of the above clinical trail can be found by clicking here . Further information can be found on the European Medicines Agency website
Are there any side-effects?
The most common side effects with Wegovy (which may affect more than 1 in 10 people) are headache, nausea (feeling sick), vomiting, diarrhoea, constipations and abdominal (belly) pain.
Side-effects can be reduced by eating smaller meals, reducing intake of sugary food, eating foods higher in protein, having regular meals and increasing fluid intake throughout the day.
Who can use Wegovy?
Mounjaro can be used by all adults with a BMI greater than 30. Some people with certain risk factors such as diabetes and blood pressure may be able to use Mounjaro with a BMI above 27 and above.

The starting dose of Wegovy is 0.25 mg injected once a week for at least 4 weeks. Subsequent doses of Wegovy can be increased every 4 weeks until the highest tolerated dose is achieved. Wegovy is available in steps of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg.

Do not use Wegovy if you are allergic to semaglutide or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (see below)
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using wegovy or during treatment if you have:
Effects on the digestive system
During treatment with wegovy, you may feel sick (nausea) or be sick (vomiting), or have diarrhoea. These side effects can cause dehydration (loss of fluids). It is important that you drink enough fluids to prevent dehydration. This is especially important if you have kidney problems. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.
Inflammation of the pancreas
If you have severe and on-going pain in the stomach area see a doctor straight away as this could be a sign of inflamed pancreas (acute pancreatitis).
Diabetes
wegovy must not be used as a substitute for insulin.
Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
wegovy can cause low blood sugar. Please see section 4 for the warning signs of low blood sugar levels. If you have diabetes and are taking a sulfonylurea or an insulin with wegovy the risk of getting low blood sugar levels (hypoglycaemia) might increase. Your doctor may ask you to test your blood sugar levels. This will help your doctor decide if the dose of the sulfonylurea or insulin needs to be changed to reduce the risk of low blood sugar.
Diabetic eye disease (retinopathy)
Fast improvements in blood sugar control may lead to a temporary worsening of diabetic eye disease. If you have diabetic eye disease and experience eye problems while taking this medicine, talk to your doctor.
